WHAT WE DO, RESPONSIBLE CARE PERFORMANCE, LOCAL PUBLIC SAFETY, COMMUNITY SERVICE

What we do:

Surfactants manufactured at our site are used in a wide variety of agricultural products, including fertilizers, pesticides, and soil conditioners. They are also used in rug and upholstery shampoos, carpet steam cleaners, film developers, and as food additives. The addition of our surfactants to these products causes them to work more effectively and efficiently.

What products do we make?

The following is a partial list of the functionality afforded by our products.
  • Anionic surfactants
  • Dispersing Agents
  • Water Soluble Anti-Caking Agents
  • Surfatropes / Hydrotropes - (Coupling Agents that have combined detergency, wetting, and dispersing properties in a single molecule)
  • Agricultural Wetting Agents
  • Soil and pesticide additives
  • Water Treating Compounds
  • Specialty Products
  • Crystal habit modifiers
  • UDET Line Detergents
  • Low Color Products (Where lighter color formulations are required)

Akzo Nobel Surfactants ("Akzo Nobel") Fort Worth manufacturing site is located at 611 E. Northside Drive on the West Fork of the Trinity River, just south of the Stockyards. Our site includes a manufacturing area, offices, a research and development laboratory, and a quality control laboratory. We employ approximately 50 people.

Built in 1974, the Fort Worth site has previously been operated by several different owners such as Petrochemicals, Inc., Desoto, Witco, and Crompton. Akzo Nobel purchased the facility in mid-2002. The Fort Worth Plant occupies 25 acres, while the actual manufacturing facility occupies 6 acres.

  • How do we make our products?

Many of the materials we start with are basic petroleum chemicals or naturally derived from plants and animals. These chemicals are reacted under heat and pressure to form our products. Many of the products we sell are product mixtures known as blended surfactants. These blended products are highly specialized and custom formulated for one particular customer with one particular use. As a result, Akzo Nobel sells a large number of different products manufactured at the Houston plant in a variety of packages to meet our customers' individual needs. These products are shipped via truck carriers in drum, bag and bulk quantities and also via rail. Many of the products manufactured at the Houston Plant are exported out of the United States.

    Responsible CareĀ® and Akzo Nobel:

In this era of environmental awareness, our objectives include elimination of solvents, maximizing the use of aqueous formulations, developing water dispersible granules, eliminating disposal problems associated with containers, controlling release rates of active ingredients, and providing multi-active surfactant formulations. Akzo Nobel continues to lead development of new technologies.

As a member of the American Chemistry Council (ACC), Akzo Nobel Fort Worth is committed to upholding the tenets of Responsible Care. Every step, from process design to delivery, is evaluated and geared to meet our customers' needs with never a compromise of environmental or product safety. Akzo Nobel has endorsed the American Chemistry Council's seven Responsible Care Codes of Management Practices since its inception in 1988. Through these efforts, we have implemented a community awareness and emergency response program and conduct annual auditing of our performance in pollution prevention, process safety, and employee health and safety.

We place great value on being a good neighbor. We adhere to all environmental regulations and participate in a Community Advisory Panel to inform our neighbors about our operations and to provide a forum for their concerns. Regular open houses are held and citizens are invited to see what we do.

    ISO 14001 & ISO 9001:2000 Certifications:

  • The Fort Worth plant acheived ISO 14001 Certification (Environmental) - Certification was received in the 4th quarter of 2004.
  • On September 20, 1993 the plant received ISO 9002 Certification (International Standard Organization for Quality).
